About Diabetes Drug Types: Physicians have several classes of diabetes medications at their disposal when treating patients with diabetes. Sulfonylureas and Meglitinides stimulate beta cells to release insulin; Biguanides decrease the volume of glucose produced by the liver; Thiazolidinediones help insulin work better and reduce glucose production; DPP-4 inhibitors allow the naturally occurring GLP-1 process to stay active longer; and Alpha-glucosidase inhibitors block starch breakdown in the intestine.
