The Department of Endocrinology and Diabetes provides state-of-the-art diagnostic evaluation and treatment for children and adolescents with hormonal disorders. The faculty has particular interest and experience in disorders of growth and development as well as diabetes. The department maintains the only facility in the Gulf South for determination of integrated hormonal concentration, which is particularly useful in the diagnosis of growth hormone and adrenal hormone disorders.

The endocrine faculty also has extensive expertise and experience in the diagnosis and therapy of disorders of puberty, hypoglycemia, genital abnormalities, bone mineral disorders, adrenal and thyroid abnormalities, and disorders of the anterior and posterior pituitary.

The staff also has a masters-level endocrine nurse coordinator who rounds out the endocrine team. The endocrine nurse coordinator arranges diagnostic procedures and provides educational support to patients and families in administration of endocrine therapies and home management.

The department maintains a specialized multidisciplinary team for comprehensive management of childhood diabetes. In addition to the endocrinologists, the team includes a masters-level CDE diabetes nurse educator, a CDE pediatric nutritionist, a pediatric psychologist, a pediatric exercise specialist and social worker. The team is dedicated to prevention of the long-term complications of diabetes and enhancing the quality of life for the patient and his/her family.
