Central Arizona College

The Diabetes Care and Education Certificate is designed to provide current education and training for professionals, paraprofessionals and other individuals working or in contact with people at-risk for developing diabetes or complications from diabetes. This program is also appropriate for anyone who has diabetes. The purpose of the certificate is to enhance understanding and facilitate the implementation of strategies to prevent and/or manage diabetes mellitus.


Required Courses: 15 credits

NTR141 Nutrition & Wellness (4 cr.) OR NTR104 (3 cr.) & NTR141d (1 cr.) Prerequisite: RDG094
NTR131 Introduction to Diabetes (3 cr.)

Choose at least 8.0 credits from the following list:
NTR132 Meal Planning & Preparation for Diabetes (3 cr.)
NTR134 Healthy Weight for Kids (1 cr.)
NTR135 Healthy Weight for Adults (1 cr.)
NTR136 Management of Gestational Diabetes (1 cr.)
NTR137 Carbohydrate Counting (1 cr.)
NTR191 Nutrition Counseling Skill Development (3 cr.) Prerequisites: RDG094; NTR141 or NTR104 & NTR141d
NTR231 Prevention & Management of Diabetes (3 cr.) Prerequisites: NTR131
NTR232 Culture, Behavior & Coping Skills for Diabetics (3 cr.) Prerequisites: NTR131
NTR232a Food and Culture (1 cr.)

Special Interest Course:
NTR130 Diabetes Overview (1 cr.)
Although this class is not part of the above Diabetes Certificate, it is a great special interest topic. This class is offered online. Please contact the Dietetic Education & Culinary Arts office to find out how it can be offered at your facility.

• Anyone who has diabetes or has contact with someone with diabetes
• Nutrition professionals seeking continuing education opportunities in diabetes
• Health professionals who need current knowledge in diabetes
• Paraprofessionals in healthcare, public health and community settings

Earn

• Continuing Education Credits
o 1 credit = 15 CPEU’s for RD/DTR
o Check with your credentialing agency for equivalent continuing education units

Transfer to Northern Arizona University (NAU)
Some of the diabetes courses transfer to the Bachelor’s of Science degree in Health Promotions offered by NAU.
