About Diabetic Design:

Most of Us are Diabetic by Design.
Nobody becomes diabetic on purpose. Some of us are predisposed to becoming diabetic because of our family history and some of us become diabetic because we do not eat the right foods, we do not exercise and we let stress rule our lives.

The State of Diabetes.
Diabetes is out of control here in the United States and all over the world. Diabetes is characterized by either low levels of insulin in the body or from the body's resistance to insulin. The diabetes epidemic could see as many as 50 million Americans suffering from diabetes if preventative measures are not put into place. If nothing is done to reverse the trend, this number can only go up.

The American Diabetes Association (ADA) claims "there are 20.8 million children and adults in the United States, or 7% of the population... While an estimated 14.6 million have been diagnosed with diabetes, unfortunately, 6.2 million people (or nearly one-third) are unaware that they have the disease. Due to many circumstances related to poor nutritional choices and a dramatic reduction in the amount of exercise, those figures are expected to continue to grow."

Doctors and researchers have found that obesity and diabetes are connected. People who are obese or overweight are at high risk for developing Type 2 diabetes (also known as "insulin-resistant" or "adult-onset" diabetes), particularly if a close family member is affected with the disease. Therefore, it becomes very important to maintain a healthy body weight throughout your life in order to protect yourself from developing a chronic disease like diabetes.

Historically, the ADA and other researchers have claimed that the best way to control the effects of diabetes is to take insulin or other drugs and to eat a "balanced" diet of grains, fruits, and "moderate sugars" while eating a low fat diet.

But Are They Right?
New research from many doctors and researchers all over the world shows that a lifestyle of moderate exercise, a reduction of stress and a diet without bleached white flour and sugar can reduce our chances of becoming diabetic. In fact, even the ADA is changing their tune (read here). While everyone agrees that moderate exercise is important, today's experts are normalizing blood sugars, reducing the amount of medicines taken by diabetics and pre-diabetics and prescribing food options that include the low carb lifestyle. Type 2 diabetes can often be controlled by monitoring the food one eats and by partaking in regular physical exercise. Respected physicians like Dr. Richard K. Bernstein, Drs. Michael and Mary Dan Eades, Dr. Atkins (that's right Dr. Atkins) and his disciples like Dr. Keith Berkowitz and Dr. Fred Pescatore, and noted journalists and researchers like Gary Taubes and David Mendosa know that achieving normal blood sugars can eliminate chronic fatigue, energize the body, reduce serum cholesterol and triglyceride levels and reduce the amount of medications you take each day. We believe the best way to do this is to follow the low carb lifestyle.

What can be done to stop this diabetic epidemic on the national level?
We need to look at what causes diabetes in the first place. People become diabetic due to their food choices and their lack of physical exercise. In our fast-paced society, we do not cook at home like we used to and we eat a steady diet of fast food and processed grains and sugars. Major multi-national corporations are profiting from selling nutritionally bankrupt foods that are making us fat and diabetic.

We need to eat more functional foods - foods that are without sugars and refined flours, higher in protein and fiber and do not spike our blood sugars. If we eat unhealthy foods while avoiding physical exercise, we will have a higher chance of becoming diabetic over time. This is not a medical mystery - this is an epidemic.

What We Do.
DiabeticDesign is a CarbSmart company. We have been living and promoting the low carb lifestyle as a way to lose and maintain weight and to lower the effects of diabetes since 1999. Our goal is to improve the quality of life of diabetics and pre-diabetics through low carbohydrate food choices, better and more frequent exercise, and diabetes education and prevention. Although most diabetics need some level of medication in their daily life, we believe a lifestyle change is the first step to regulating our blood sugar levels.
