The National Institutes of Health on Monday awarded Nemours Children’s Clinic a $2.86 million grant to research use of glucose sensors in treatment of childhood diabetes.
Dr. Tim Wysocki is the principal research scientist and will be conducting most of the study in Jacksonville. He will coordinate with fellow Nemours doctors and co-investigators Jorge Daaboul in Orlando, Mark Kummer in Pensacola and Grafton Reeves in Wilmington, Del.
“Recent research has shown that, compared with adults, adolescents may derive less benefit from using continuous glucose sensors,” Wysocki said, adding that it may be because they don’t use the device as consistently as adults, or don’t use the information to adjust eating, insulin intake and exercise.
Nemours is a leader in clinical research on continuous glucose sensors in treating Type 1 diabetes in children and adolescents.
The grant project will allow its researchers to enroll 150 adolescents and their parents in the five-year study.
