New research has found that people with diabetes are at risk of having their brain slowed down by the disease, resulting in a number of neurological problems including Alzheimer's.

The team, based at the University of Alberta, found that mental processing in adults of all ages is affected by the condition, with response times and executive functioning compromised should the person be diabetic.
Publishing their results in Neuropsychology, the team looked into the cognitive reactions of 41 adults between 53 and 90 who had type-2 diabetes, with 424 adults in good health used as the study's counterpoint.
Although it was previously known that Alzheimer's was more likely in patients with diabetes, the researchers hope the results of the tests will help branch out diabetes research and in turn aid the understanding of other neurological conditions.
