History

Aoki Diabetes Research Institute (ADRI), located in Sacramento, California, is a non-profit organization founded in 1986 by Thomas T. Aoki, M.D. to further research efforts in the areas of diabetes and metabolism.
Research Goals

Much of ADRI's research relates to chronic intermittent intravenous insulin therapy (CIIIT), also called metabolic activation therapy (MAT), a therapy that appears to "activate" or improve metabolic activity in the liver and other organs. Research conducted by ADRI includes basic science laboratory investigations and also observational studies of clinical outcomes (results of treating patients). Scientific reports of the results of research by ADRI and others can be found in Research Reports.

Use of CIIIT in addition to the A.D.A. recommended therapy for Type I diabetes has been associated with improved glucose control. More important that improved glucose control has been the improvement seen in diabetic complications. A multi-center study, done by others, has shown the benefit of CIIIT in stabilizing diabetic kidney disease. Other research results show improvement in hypertension, orthostatic hypotension, and hypoglycemia unawareness.

Diabetes Symposium

The U. C. Davis Medical School annual Diabetes Symposium in March in Sacramento usually includes an update on chronic intermittent intravenous insulin therapy (metabolic activation therapy). Funding for Research

Research at ADRI is supported in part by grants and donations. The fund raising efforts by patients, families, staff and friends continue to inspire, encourage, and sustain ADRI.

We are currently seeking funding for research studies in several areas for which there is strong anecdotal evidence of benefit of CIIIT; diabetic retinopathy, foot ulcers and gastroparesis.
