Cabell Huntington Hospital's Diabetic Clinic is an ambulatory outpatient care center. The clinic treats insulin and non-insulin dependent diabetics. The staff is committed to helping our patients prevent diabetes-related complications and improving their overall quality of life.
What is diabetes?

Diabetes mellitus is a group of diseases distinguished by high levels of blood-circulating sugar resulting from problems with insulin secretion, insulin action, or both. Diabetes affects 15 million Americans and can be associated with an increased risk of heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, blindness, kidney disease and amputations.
How is diabetes treated?

The best treatment for preventing complications is keeping blood glucose near normal levels at all times. People with diabetes must be educated about their disease and learn new skills to help them manage their diabetes on a day-to-day basis. Treatment should be individualized and must address medical, psychosocial and lifestyle issues.

Who will care for me?

The Cabell Huntington Hospital Diabetic Clinic believes in the team approach for diabetes care and education. The clinic's physician and director is Marshall University School of Medicine's board-certified endocrinologist, Dr. Bruce Chertow. The clinic team also includes a registered nurse, a registered dietitian and a diabetes educator. A pharmacist is also available to provide information regarding medication, and the social work staff can assist patients when needed.
Am I eligible for care?

The Cabell Huntington Hospital Diabetic Clinic provides quality care to patients in a caring environment. The clinic provides care to West Virginia residents with diabetes who have little or no insurance, Medicaid or Medicare. Medication assistance is available to those who qualify for the clinic.
