The prevention of diabetic atherosclerosis may not be as easy as exerting good control over one's diabetes.1 Preliminary studies of the activity of pyrophosphatase in bone cells show that pre-incubation with human insulin in physiologic concentrations resulted in a three-fold increase in the activity of pyrophosphatase. Pyrophosphates (P-Pi) are liberated in the process of breaking high energy phosphate bonds. P-Pi are in the serum and in the aorta in concentrations large enough to prevent or inhibit calcification.2
