In general, residents of New Hampshire can be turned down for a health insurance policy that you purchase on your own (an individual health insurance policy) based on any health conditions they may have. This is called medical underwriting. In most cases, diabetes is considered an “uninsurable” condition. Even though you can be turned down for an individual policy in New Hampshire, you can never be turned down for health insurance that is offered through an employer.

If you are a self-employed individual without employees, you can purchase a small group health plan in New Hampshire. You will be offered the opportunity to purchase this coverage at two times per year – during the months of September and March. If you are insured on the last day of the open enrollment period and you then lose coverage because you were terminated from another plan, you can purchase coverage as a self-employed person within the first 30 days after you lose the previous coverage. Please check with the Department of Insurance to find out any additional eligibility criteria that may apply.

If you are having a problem with your state-regulated health insurance plan and you are unable to resolve it with the plan directly, file a complaint with the Department of Insurance. They may be able to provide you with assistance in reaching a conclusion.
