Diabetes Services at the OLBH Diabetes & Wound Care Center

People with diabetes can live active, healthy lives through advice and programs offered by the OLBH Diabetes Center's quality self-management education program, "Taking Control." The healthcare professionals of the Diabetes Center provide comprehensive instruction regarding all aspects of diabetes care whether you are diagnosed with Type 1, Type II, Pre-Diabetes, Gestational Diabetes, or a juvenile patient.

Combinations of individual and group sessions are utilized to instruct patients on proper care, diet and health lifestyles. A registered dietitian and diabetes nurse educators help patients meet their specific needs including meal planning, medication dosing/scheduling and glucose monitoring.

Healthy Living with Diabetes

As a means to control diabetes and prevent related health problems such as limb amputation or blindness, the Diabetes Center provides patients detailed instruction on blood sugar management, medication usage/precautions, exercise, nutrition and stress management. Instruction is geared toward the individual's type and scope of diabetes.

Type I Diabetes -- A disease in which the body does not produce any insulin. Type I diabetes most often occurs in children and young adults and accounts for five to 10 percent of all diabetes in the United States.

Type II Diabetes -- A metabolic disorder, Type II diabetes results from the body's inability to make enough, or properly use insulin.

Diabetes Support Network

The Diabetes Center offers support groups for both youth and adults living with diabetes or pre-diabetes and their families. The support groups provide information regarding the newest recommendations for care and activity management. In addition, the sessions offer individuals with diabetes or pre-diabetes an environment for sharing mutual experiences.

The Diabetes Center of Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital also offers a support group for children living with diabetes or asthma and their families. "Quest for Control: Diabetes in Youth Support Group" meets periodically throughout the year for educational offerings, planned activities, and support. Some of the planned activities in the past have included a trip to a Cincinnati Reds ballgame, swimming, and camping expeditions and there many more events planned for the upcoming year.
