Diabetic patients in hypoglycaemic coma may be best treated by gradually increasing blood glucose levels rather than restoring glucose quickly, say US researchers. It follows research on hypoglycaemic mice that showed that, although hypoglycaemia induced some neuronal death, more extensive damage was seen after rapid glucose infusion. Neuronal death correlated with production of superoxide, which was found to increase with the amount of glucose that infused rapidly (JCI Online 2007).
