Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is an emergency condition caused by untreated hyperglycemia or - for people with diabetes mellitus. Diabetic ketoacidosis is a state of inadequate insulin levels resulting in high blood sugar and accumulation of organic acids and ketones in the blood. Check for insulin deficiency and increased levels of stress hormones. Diabetic ketoacidosis is common among Type I diabetics but may also occur in Type II diabetics. DKA is characterized by high blood sugar, acidosis, and high levels of ketone bodies.
