Description: The 2009 course, created for endocrinologists and interested internists and surgeons, will present the latest material on the diagnosis and treatment of endocrine disorders. The faculty will be selected from the Mayo Clinic for their expertise, knowledge and clinical acumen.
COURSE HIGHLIGHTS
Designed for endocrinologists and interested internists and surgeons, the Twelfth Mayo Clinic Endocrine Course will offer the latest material on the diagnosis and treatment of endocrine disorders. Faculty are selected from Mayo Clinic for their expertise, knowledge and clinical acumen. This 5-day (7:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. daily) course will span the full spectrum of endocrinology through lectures, debates, clinicopathologic sessions, “clinical pearls” sessions, informal breakfast round table discussions, and small group discussions with experts. There will be plenty of opportunity for interaction with the course faculty.
Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:
Summarize the utility of thyroid ultrasound in the assessment of thyroid nodules.
Discuss the latest information on medullary thyroid carcinoma.
Review the utility of calcitonin, thyroglobulin, and novel tumor markers in the management of thyroid cancer.
Consider the application of absolute fracture risk data in treatment of patients with osteoporosis.
Review the drugs that impact bone health.
Discuss the adverse effects of bisphosphonates.
Assess the merits of different approaches to following the patient with osteoporosis in a case-based debate format: bone turnover markers vs. bone mineral density vs. clinical follow-up.
Review the approaches to thyroid disease in pregnancy.
Discuss evaluation of the nondiabetic patient with hypoglycemia.
Summarize the extra-thyroidal manifestations of Graves’ disease and review treatment options.
Discuss critical issues in the evaluation and management of osteoporosis in a case- based format.
Review the approach to managing hypoglycemic unawareness in the patient with type 1 diabetes.
Discuss shared decision making in endocrinology.
Review the evaluation of the patient with gynecomastia.
Discuss case-based approaches to the evaluation and management of endocrine hypertension.
Review the pathogenesis of impaired fasting glucose and progression to diabetes mellitus.
Discuss case management for patients with endocrine malignancies, thyroid disorders, diabetes mellitus, pituitary disorders, osteoporosis, gastroparesis, diabetic nephropathy, diabetic retinopathy, obesity, and adrenal disorders.
Participate in Round Table discussions of thyroid ultrasound, the artificial pancreas, evidence-based endocrinology, male hypogonadism in aging, endocrine surgery, radiation oncology, endocrine laboratory testing, bariatric surgery, and pediatric endocrinology.
Consider current pharmacotherapeutic options for the treatment of diabetes mellitus.
Assess the merits of different goals for treatment of the patient with diabetes mellitus in a case-based debate format: glycemic control end points vs. patient important outcomes.
Review glucocorticoid-induced diabetes mellitus.
Discuss the evaluation and management of diabetic gastrointestinal dysmotility.
Review the diagnosis and treatment of diabetic nephropathy.
Discuss what endocrinologists should know about endocrine surgery.
Review challenging management issues in patients with prolactinomas.
Discuss case-based clinical pearls in patients with gastroenteropancreatic tumors.
Review the role for “steroids in the intensive care unit”.
Consider the diagnostic evaluation of unknown thyroid and adrenal cases in computer-based clinicopathologic presentation format.
Review the issue of “normal weight obesity”.
Assess new surgical approaches to the management of obesity.
Review the medical complications of bariatric surgery.
Assess the factors that impact appetite regulation.
Review the effects of vitamin D “beyond bones”.
Discuss lessons learned from patients with endocrine disorders when management setbacks occurred.
