Diabetes of all kinds is debilitating and affects every organ system in the human body. There are two major types of diabetes - type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease also known as juvenile diabetes, and type 2 diabetes is a metabolic disorder also known as adult onset diabetes.
Diabetes afflicts 194 million people worldwide, and the World Health Organization estimates that number will more than double by 2030. As many as 3 million Americans have type 1 diabetes. It is the leading cause of kidney failure, adult blindness, and non-traumatic amputations, and a leading cause of nerve damage, stroke, and heart attacks. In 2002, diabetes accounted for more than $132 billion in health-care costs in the United States.
Founded in 1970 by parents of children with type 1 diabetes, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation has awarded more than $900 million to diabetes research, including more than $98 million in FY2005. The Starlight Benefit series is an Idaho-based fundraising vehicle that supports the work by JDRF. Many participants have personal commitments to keep fighting for a cure; others are simply looking for a positive way to give back to their community; all are inspired to meet the challenge. Whatever your motive, events like the Starlight Snowshoe Benefit are unforgettable experiences that will leave you with a feeling of great satisfaction and that will bring us closer to a cure for diabetes, one step at a time.
