Annual Jennifer Albright Memorial Golf Tournament
Annual Jennifer Albright Memorial Golf Tournament

Since 2004 Jim and Sherre Albright of Albright Remodeling and Chuck Smith of the Smith Lumber and Hardware Center in Lakeville, NY have sponsored an annual golf tournament benefiting the American Diabetes Association’s summer camp for diabetic children.

The camp is held at the Rochester Rotary Sunshine Campus in Rush, New York. Two sessions are held each summer, one for children 8-12 and one for children 12-16. At the camp children learn how to manage their illness better while having fun with other youngsters who share their situation.

Just as important, the children also learn that having diabetes doesn’t mean you can’t have fun and be just like other kids. Approximately 225 children attend the camp each summer, many through scholarships. Also, about 90% of the teenage camp counselors are diabetics themselves, often former campers who have graduated to a mentoring role. The medical staff is top-notch and includes residents from the University of Rochester. The children who attend are so very thankful to spend a week with others who are just like them. They are finally free to share their experiences, fears and milestones with others who truly understand them.

Dedicated to the Memory of Jennifer Albright
Jennifer Albright passed away in 2002 at age twenty-nine from complications of juvenile diabetes. Since Jen was a Special Education teacher, a charity that meets the needs of children with diabetes seemed an appropriate memorial. Since her death we have directed contributions in her memory to the American Diabetes Association’s summer camp for diabetic children.
