Whether you are newly diagnosed, or have been living with diabetes, you can learn more about improving your quality of life and preventing complications.
The Diabetes Education Center includes a nurse/dietitian team of certified diabetes educators committed to providing quality education and self-care skills training to clients with diabetes, their families, and the community. Our purpose is to assist the physician in the education and medical management of diabetes. Classes are offered in three locations: Aspen, Carbondale, and Glenwood Springs.
Type 1 Diabetes - Self-Management & Education
We provide individual counseling for people with Type 1 diabetes. These sessions teach intensive management to allow greatest flexibility for a happy and healthy lifestyle.
You will learn:
* Why taking insulin is important and how to fit it into your life.
* How new blood glucose technology improves your lifestyle.
* How nutrition and carbohydrate counting can improve blood sugar control and prevent hypo/hyperglycemia.
* How physical activity can affect blood sugar levels and insulin dosage.
* How to manage your diabetes when you’re sick.
Type 2 Diabetes - BASICS Program
Offered in both individual and class settings, this program teaches how to take care of diabetes day to day. It is designed for people with Type 2 diabetes who need to update skills or begin to manage a new diagnosis of diabetes. This program focuses on ways to improve quality of life and prevent complications.
You will learn:
* What diabetes is and how it affects your body.
* How good nutrition, carbohydrate counting, and meal planning can help you control your blood sugar.
* How physical activity can improve your blood glucose levels.
* How to monitor your blood sugar.
* When to change your medication or monitoring schedule.
This program is taught in four sessions over six months. The first session provides the knowledge and skills needed to begin or improve self-management of your diabetes. Each follow-up session builds on your skills to help you evaluate how your treatment plan is working.
Metabolic Syndrome (Pre-Diabetes) Program
This initiative focuses on the prevention of diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. Metabolic syndrome affects over 40 million Americans, but early detection and treatment can change the course of the disease and prevent serious complications. Classes address lifestyle change through weight loss, regular exercise, and stress management.
Other Diabetes Services
Individual consultation is available for gestational diabetes, impaired glucose tolerance, and Spanish-speaking clients.
Cost
Most insurance plans cover all or part of your diabetes education. Cost varies depending upon your educational needs. You are encouraged to check on your individual coverage.
