CAMP JORDAN IS A GREAT ADVENTURE featuring traditional camp activities while making friends with other children who understand the challenges of having diabetes. Established in 1966 by the West Central Richmond Optimist Club and Dr. William R. Jordan, Camp Jordan continues to provide a fun and exciting camp experience for children learning to manage their diabetes, with the supervision of trained counselors, nurses and doctors.
Camp Aims
Relay Race
* Fun for all campers
* Promote comradeship and problem-sharing with other kids who share the challenges of diabetes
* Help campers deal with feelings about diabetes
* Help campers develop independence and self-reliance
* Teach needed techniques for:
* Diet Planning
* Home Glucose Monitoring
* Hypoglycemia (recognition and treatment)
* Adjustments for sports and other activities
* Enable campers to be giving their own injections by the end of the camp session

Program
Camp Jordan is hosted by Makemie Woods in Barhamsville VA (near Williamsburg VA), and the program closely resembles the Makemie Woods programs. Makemie Woods is accredited by the American Camp Association .
In addition to the swimming, canoeing, crafts, campfires, cookouts, games, archery etc., that are standards in the Makemie Woods programs, education about nutrition and other concerns specific to diabetes is provided. Bible study and worship are offered as options, but are not required.

Personnel
Physicians and nurses will provide medical supervision. Many of the medical, nursing, and nutritional personnel are volunteers from the supporting hospitals and private practices. Counselors, certified lifeguards for water activities, and program directors directly supervise the campers in all activities. The program staff is provided by Makemie Woods and is recruited nationally and internationally. They are carefully screened and trained to provide a safe and successful experience. Frequently there are members of the staff who have diabetes and attended Camp Jordan when they were younger. Learn more about becoming a member of the Makemie Woods staff.
Persons who are interested in volunteering as medical staff for Camp Jordan should contact Dr. Marta Satin-Smith by e-mail , persons interesting in volunteering in other capacities for Camp Jordan must complete a training weekend in June and undergo background checks, volunteer applicants must have completed at least 11th grade.
