This past season Camp Koda day program developed a new partnership with the University of Manitoba Mini U. Eight Camp Koda campers age 6-9, participated in a week full of fun during the Fun, Sport and Fitness Plus session which took place from July 7-11, 2008. The week proved to be fun for all. Camp Koda campers and Camp Diabetes Aides participated in crafts, super science experiments and sporty activities. The program combined the most popular recreational activities with one hour of crafts and an hour of science adventures daily. Recreation activities included archery, gymnastics, basketball, soccer, earth ball, swimming and much more.
As Camp Koda is a blended day program participants were able to learn about life with type 1 diabetes as they watched their Camp Koda friends monitor their blood sugar levels, deal with high and low blood sugars and count carbohydrates. Camp Koda campers enjoyed teaching their fellow campers about diabetes and sharing diabetes management tips with other children living with type 1 diabetes.
Camp Koda is a great introduction to a camp program and can serve as a stepping-stone for those participants that may eventually attend Camp Briardale the Canadian Diabetes Association residential camp program.
