Camp Sweeney is one of few camps in the country designed specifically for kids with diabetes. The only requirement to attend is that a camper has diabetes. No camper has ever been turned away from Camp Sweeney because of race, religion, color, nationality or financial need.
Camp Sweeney has served more than 20,000 campers since 1950. Many entered Camp Sweeney at age 6 and attended every summer through age 18. Some have returned as counselors. And some are even sending their own kids to Camp Sweeney. Camp Sweeney, it seems, is more a family than a camp.
Basic Facts about Camp Sweeney
* Camp Sweeney is located 75 miles north of Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas, eight miles east of Gainesville. The camp can be reached from Interstate 35 by going east of Gainesville on U.S. Highway 82. Then go north on FM 678 one mile to reach the campgrounds. See map.
* There are three 3-week summer sessions, a 1-week winter session, and a 3-day spring family session each year.
* Serves over 1000 youngsters with diabetes each year.
* Tuition fees are broken down into two parts: camping fees and medical fees. The Medical portion is collected on behalf of the Southwestern Diabetic Physician Association. Some health insurance companies may cover a portion of the medical cost of the tuition.
* Financial aid is available based on household size and household income.
* Camp Sweeney is owned and operated by Southwestern Diabetic Foundation, a non-profit organization.
Any child with diabetes, between the ages of 6 and 18, is invited to attend Camp Sweeney. Campers are welcome regardless of sex, color, race, creed, religion or nationality.
