For over half a century, Camp Tanager has offered camp experiences for children ages 7 to 11 whose special social, economic, or medical needs might not otherwise allow them to enjoy a summer camp experience.

Established in 1926 as a private, non-profit camp for children with health problems, Camp Tanager now serves over 600 children each summer. "Camperships" on a sliding fee scale permit all children to enjoy Camp Tanager regardless of income.

Located 1.4 miles east of Hwy 13 on Mt. Vernon Road, Camp Tanager is completely modernized and is under the direction of Tanager Place. The camp features three sleeping cabins, a main lodge/dining hall with a kitchen and indoor recreation area and a bath shower house. There is a large outdoor swimming pool and baseball field on the camp grounds and nearly forty acres of land which includes natural hiking trails and sports fields.

Children come to Camp Tanager to make friends, have fun, and learn through a camping experience. Campers may participate in the following variety of activities:

Archery, Arts and Crafts, Badminton, Campfires, Carnivals, Dance, Educational Speakers, Fishing, Hayrack Rides, Hiking, Movies, Nature Study, Games, Roller-Skating, Skits, Soccer, Softball, Swimming, and Volleyball.

Special Camps

Diabetes Camp: The Diabetes Camp at Camp Tanager provides children and adolescents with diabetes a safe and healthy environment to enjoy a variety of recreational activities designed for fun and fitness. At the same time, children with diabetes acquire a better understanding of their disorder. The Diabetes Camp began in 1987 and has increased participation each year to approximately 58 children. The Camp has a 24-hour on-site physician and nursing staff. The Diabetes camp is one of two such camps in Iowa and is held the end of July.

Hemophilia Camp: The Hemophilia Camp is held each year in mid June. This special camp is one-of-a-kind in the Midwest. During the six-day camp, children with hemophilia and their siblings participate in individual and group activities designed for fun and fitness, as well as gain a better understanding of hemophilia and its effects on individuals and families. The Hemophilia camp has a 24-hour on site physician and nursing staff. The camp began in 1986 and serves approximately 59 children with hemophilia and sibling campers each year.
