Capital Health - Stollery Children's Hospital - Pediatric Diabetes Education Centre

The Pediatric Diabetes Education Centre provides assessment, intervention and education to children diagnosed with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes, who live in Northern Alberta, Northwest British Columbia and the Northwest Territories. At the time of diagnosis, parents with their child, are provided four to five days of intensive outpatient diabetes treatment, education and support.

The Pediatric Diabetes Education Centre (PDEC) consists of a multidisciplinary team including Pediatric Endocrinologists, who are specialists in diabetes in children, Registered Nurses, Registered Dietitians and a Registered Social Worker Counselor.

Services and supports include: Continuing diabetes education, ongoing diabetes health assessment and adjustment of diabetes care plan, child and family supports and counseling, nutritional education and supports, and information and referral.

Children, newly diagnosed during weekdays, are quickly accommodated. During evenings and weekends, children who require immediate medical supports may first be admitted to hospital, or to Home Care, to be stabilized on insulin.

For initial training, families from distant locations will need to arrange local accommodations. Information about options is available from PDEC.
