According to researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, major depression is prevalent among people with diabetes, with American Indians and Alaska natives suffering the highest rates. Published in the medical journal Diabetes Care, the recent study sampled 18,814 diabetics, finding an 8.3% prevalence of major depression. Age and gender were factors as well; 30- to 39-year-olds and women had the highest incidence of depression. Researchers also found that type 2 diabetics who were currently using insulin had a higher rate of major depression than type 1 diabetics and type 2 diabetics not using insulin. They urged professionals to routinely screen people with diabetes for major depression.
