Do you feel stuffed long before you’ve finished your meal? If so, you might have a complication called diabetic gastroparesis, often caused by high blood glucose levels. It’s a condition in which the stomach takes too long to empty its contents. Some people experience nausea, while others may feel like they can’t eat as much as they once did. Other symptoms include heartburn, pain in the upper abdomen, vomiting, or abdominal bloating. If you have diabetic gastroparesis, you run the risk of hypoglycemia if the insulin taken before a meal is not yet absorbed in the bloodstream. You may have to adjust when you take your insulin injection or oral medication to prevent low blood sugars and to match the absorption of carbohydrates from your meal. Avoid foods high in fiber or fat, which will exacerbate the condition. If you’ve noticed yourself filling up at a faster rate, consult your doctor and inquire about proper medication.
