If you are concerned that you may be diabetic, make an appointment to see a doctor or nurse. It just requires a simple blood test to check this.
The good news is that diabetes treatments are very effective and there is a lot you can do to help yourself to avoid the complications.

If it is confirmed that you are diabetic, you will be seen regularly by the nurse (sometimes together with the doctor) until we have it under control. After that you'll be invited for a 3 to 12 monthly check up with the nurse to make sure that things are still going well.
Diabetes Facts
* Type 1 diabetes tends to start in younger people, and always requires insulin to treat it. It comes on quickly and usually the person has to go into hospital at first
* Type 2 diabetes happens in older people (40 - 75), is slow to come on and can often be managed with tablets
* 1.4 million people are known to have diabetes in the UK
* 3/4 of these people have type 2 diabetes
* It is estimated that about 1 million people in the UK have diabetes without knowing it

* Being overweight
* A family history of the disease
* Aged between 40 - 75
* If you are of Asian of Afro-Caribbean descent
* Women who have given birth to a large baby
