Hello! I am Walt, a kidney transplant patient. I lost my kidneys because of diabetes and high blood pressure. There was a time in my diabetes that I did not respect the awesome power that diabetes exacts over a body if not kept under control. I have learned a lot, mostly through the school of hard knocks. 2. Obesity: People over their ideal body weight
3. Gestational Diabetes: People who had diabetes with pregnancy only
4. Life style: People who exercise less and have a sedentary lifestyle;
5. Glucose Intolerance: Individuals who have impaired glucose intolerance (fasting glucose levels being higher than normal (120+)
6. Fat: Individuals with high triglyceride (fat) level in the blood.

1. See your primary care professional
2. Have her screen you for diabetic kidney disease.
3. You will need a blood creatinine level which can be used to determine your kidney function. This level varies according to your age, sex, race, and weight.
4. Your urine will need to be screened for protein.

(A small amount of protein in the urine is called microalbuminuria. Larger amount is called more generally proteinuria or frank proteinuria.)

What Can I do if I am at risk?
1. See Your Doctor.
2. Get Your Sugar Control Number (A1C) Below 7%.
3. If You Have High Blood Pressure (Hypertension), Get Your Blood Pressure Below 130/80.
4. If You Have Small Or Large Amounts Of Protein In The Urine, Ask Your Health Care Provider If You Are Right For A Group Of Medicines Called Ace Inhibitors And ARB's Which Can Lower The Protein In The Urine And Help To Protect Your Kidneys Against Diabetes.
5. Exercise (If Ok With Your Healthcare Provider) At Least 3 Times Per Week. Aerobic Activity Is Needed.
6. Get Down To Your Ideal Body Weight.
7. If You Have A Family History Of Diabetes, Get Screened.
8. If You Already Gave Diabetes, Keep Your Blood Sugar Levels Under Control. Check Your Sugar Often.
9. Wear Your Medical Id Bracelet Or Jewelry In Case Of An Accident.
10. Stay Positive.
