* Approximately 10.2% of Louisiana residents are estimated to have been diagnosed with diabetes by a physician (BRFSS).
* African Americans have the highest prevalence of diabetes, with a 13.7% diagnosis rate, compared to 8.2% of Hispanics and 8.9% of the white population (BRFSS).
* African Americans comprise nearly 32% of Louisiana’s population but possess the highest diabetes prevalence rate and highest diabetes death rate.
* In 2006, the total cost of diabetes to Louisiana was approximately $2,431,000,000. Nationwide, $1 in $10 health care dollars is attributed to diabetes. (ADA Economic Costs of Diabetes in the U.S. in 2007, 2008).
* In 2002, diabetes was the cause of 3,190 deaths, approximately 830 (26%) listed cardiovascular disease as an underlying cause.
