Due to its high vitamin C content, Indian gooseberry (Amla or Aaonla) is considered valuable in diabetes. A tablespoon of its juice, mixed with a cup of resh bitter gourd juice, taken daily for two months helps stimulating the islets of Lengerhans (the isolated group of cells taht secrete insulin hormone).

It thus reduces the blood sugar in diabetes. Diet restriction should be strictly observed while taking thismedicine. It will also prevent eye complications in diabetes. Equal quantity of 'Amla' powder, jamun powder and bitter gourd powder also makes a very useful food remedy for diabetics. A teaspoonful of this mixture, once or twice a day would be effective in checking the progress of the ailment.

The other names of Indian gooseberry are Emblica officinalis, and Emblica myrobalan.
