About the Institute:

The International Diabetes Institute was formally opened in 1985 although services were provided from Caulfield from 1976. Our vision is to find a cure for or a means of preventing diabetes and its complications and to provide care to meet the needs of those who have diabetes or are at risk of developing it. More about the institute

Professor Zimmet:

Professor Zimmet pioneered Australia's first Institute dedicated exclusively to diabetes research, education and clinical care, becoming the Foundation Director when the International Diabetes Institute was opened at the hospital by the Governor General, Sir Ninian Stephen, in Melbourne in July 1985. In excess of 8000 patients receive care from the medical staff at the Institute making it the largest Diabetes centre in Australia. We also offer an integrated medical and education service, with an experienced diabetes care team comprising specialist physicians, diabetes nurse educators, dietitians, a counsellor and ophthalmologists. Support IDI:

The International Diabetes Institute is an independent, volunteer-based charity. We rely almost entirely on our fundraising activities to maintain the high quality of our internationally recognised programs.
