JDRF Illinois Government Relations
What We Do
JDRF Government Relations volunteers focus on securing resources and policies that will advance us towards a cure for diabetes. We urge support for federal funding, primarily through the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and we seek votes for policy to keep the doors open to the most promising scientific research.
The Impact: Elected officials pay attention to constituents. We have had enormous positive impact on the thinking, and voting, of our representatives in Washington. Federal funding directed towards diabetes has increased significantly because we’ve raised our voices. Embryonic stem cell research has garnered bi-partisan support largely through our efforts. Government Relations volunteers truly make a difference.
Be an Advocate: Here's what one new advocate had to say about her role: "I have a 5-year old diabetic granddaughter. I have never been an advocate for anything before. I was always the one who said 'let someone else do something.' Now I want to be that someone." You can be that someone too. An advocate receives updates via e-mail and contacts his/her congressman 2-4 times a year expressing an opinion about diabetes legislation. JDRF provides brief background information, “talking points,” and the elected official’s phone number. The advocate makes the call.
