The New England Journal of Medicine has published a study demonstrating that continuous glucose monitoring systems improve glucose control. The study, sponsored by the JDRF, demonstrated that patients 25+ years old who used the CGMS showed significant improvements in HbA1c results. The HbA1c is a commonly used measure of one's average blood glucose over the previous three months.
bullseye.jpgI can attest to the results from personal experience. Elizabeth has had fantastic results with her CGMS. It has enabled her to catch lows and highs before they happen, tweak her pump to tightly match her needs, and achieve a 5.4% HbA1c - all during a rapidly changing pregnancy. These results would have been impossible without the CGMS.
It is my hope that these result will spur more insurance companies to cover CGM systems. You can help prod them along by signing this petition.
