Joslin Diabetes Center today announced it has received a $1 million gift from the Thomas Beatson Jr. Foundation to support Type 1 diabetes research.
The donation will be split evenly between the labs of Joslin research doctors T. Keith Blackwell, George L. King, Gordon C. Weir and Howard A. Wolpert.
Joslin CEO Ranch Kimball said in a statement, “Joslin is incredibly grateful that Mr. Beatson chose to support these important areas of type 1 diabetes research.”
Beatson has been living with Type 1 diabetes for over 50 years. “The quality and interest of the physicians in coming up with a solution, not just coming up with something that may help, is what stands out about Joslin,” he said.
Blackwell and Weir will focus on research that involves stem cells. King will work on a technology that may help patients increase their insulin-production. Wolpert will work on software to help patients analyze glucose levels and manage the disease more effectively.
