New research from the University of Warwick has shown that those with diabetes looking for the best healthcare should consider a course of thiamine, otherwise known as vitamin B1.
Diabetics often develop kidney disease due to a slow over-secretion of the protein albumin via the urine.
This process can be reversed given the proper healthcare, according to the study.
Writing in the journal Diabetologia, study leader doctor Naila Rabbani explained that 300mg of thiamine taken orally on a daily basis led to a 41 per cent reduction in albumin excretion.
She also recorded that over a third (35 per cent) of those who took part returned to normal following the trial.
"This study once again highlights the importance of Vitamin B1 and we need to increase awareness," Doctor Rabbani said.
"[My colleague] Professor Thornalley and I are planning a foundation at the University of Warwick to further education and research in thiamine deficiency."
Thiamine is essential for every cell in the body and is required to produce ATP (adenosine triphosphate), the body's natural fuel, according to yourhealthinformation.com.
