Both type 1 and type 2 diabetics can benefit from long-term use of a new form of inhaled insulin, according to one study. Conducted by researchers at the Dallas Diabetes & Endocrine Center, the study combined the results of two clinical trials of the inhaled insulin treatment Exubera. Both studies, conducted over the course of a two-year period on separate groups of patients, concluded that use of Exubera resulted in sustained blood sugar control with few side effects. In addition, researchers noted that diabetics who used Exubera gained less weight on average than those who took traditional injected insulin. Side effects of Exubera use included mild and temporary coughing.
