Louisiana's House debates ban on cloned stem cell research

Both sides of the cloning issue touted high-powered political support June 15, 2004, as the Louisiana House began debate on legislation that would ban the cloning of human embryos for both reproduction and stem-cell medical research.

A letter in support of cloning for stem-cell research from former Governor Mike Foster and his wife Alice was distributed to House members. Foster asked members to flatly reject legislation by Representative Gary Beard, R-Baton Rouge, that would ban such cloning. They noted that Alice Foster's oldest grandson has Type 1 diabetes.
