Conference Session Course Descriptions:


* Session 1 - Understanding Diabetes: Do you have diabetes patients who are "non-compliant?" This workshop is for you! Learn how to explain the pathophysiology of diabetes so the patient will clearly understand what is needed to improve glycemic control. Diabetes has become an epidemic with children and adults! Gain an understanding of pre-diabetes and the steps to help prevent Type 2 diabetes.

* Session 2 - Understanding Obesity: Patients with diabetes often battle obesity. Even modest weight loss can have a significant impact on the prevention and treatment of diabetes. Helping a patient lose weight will be much more effective if the true causes of obesity can be identified and a positive environment is established. This seminar will look at treatments for obesity, including behavioral, medication and surgical options. Work with your patients to set "SMART" goals.

* Session 3 - School Children with Diabetes: 154,369 (or 1 in 523) young people under the age of 20 have diabetes. Current diabetes regimens require diligence and hard work on the part of children, families and school staff members. This session will include an overview of childhood diabetes, with case studies that will illustrate important issues affecting children with diabetes while they are in school.

* Session 4 - Metabolic Syndrome: Metabolic syndrome and diabetes are not synonymous. This session will define the diagnostic criteria for metabolic syndrome. You will learn how to prevent the complications of diabetes by understanding the symptoms and treatment options that include diet, exercise, medication, stress reductions and depression treatment.

* Session 5 - Insulin Therapy/CSII: Do you see patients who need to take or are taking insulin? This interactive workshop is for you! You will gain an understanding of various therapies, including the use of insulin pumps. Good glycemic control can prevent the costly and devastating complications of diabetes.

* Session 6 - Recognizing & Reducing Risks and Complications of Diabetes: Diabetes is the number one cause of blindness, non-traumatic amputation and new cases of renal failure. 60-70% of patients with diabetes die of either a heart attack or a stroke, which is 2-4 times as many as those without diabetes. Control of ABC's (A1C, blood pressure and cholesterol) can delay or prevent these devastating complications.

* Session 7 - Pump Use in Children: Insulin pump therapy is a potential option for children of all ages. The steps involved in helping children and families transition from insulin injections to a pump will be demonstrated. Case studies of children using pump therapy will be reviewed.

* Session 8 - Neurogenic Ulcers: Wound healing is challenging overall - but add diabetes to the mix and you certainly can feel overwhelmed! This session examines what's new in many aspects of wound care that can help with the challenges of the patient with diabetes. The care of a diabetic foot ulcer takes more than a wound specialist. Every discipline involved needs to be knowledgeable about wound healing.

* Session 9 - Gestational Diabetes: Gestational Diabetes affects up to 7% of all US pregnancies, or about 200,000 women annually. Current guidelines for risk assessment, screening approaches, glycemic control goals, and treatment strategies will be reviewed.

* Session 10 - Type 2 Diabetes Medications: Do you see diabetes patients who have blood glucose levels above 200? This workshop is for you! The costly, devastating complications of diabetes can be prevented with good glycemic control utilizing oral medications and insulin. The latest algorithm for initiating oral medications for the Type 2 patient will be discussed. Also, this workshop will describe how and when to initiate insulin therapy.

* Session 1 - Understanding Diabetes:
1. Discuss the pathophysiology of diabetes, classifications and diagnoses, and explain how to incorporate that information into patient education.
2. State the reported relationship between obesity, glucose intolerance (pre-diabetes), and the prevention of Type 2 diabetes.

* Session 2 - Understanding Obesity:
1. Identify both environmental and genetic causes of obesity.
2. Assist patients to set appropriate goals, then identify and break barriers.
3. Design a positive support system to assist patients in achieving goals.

* Session 3 - School Children with Diabetes:
1. Describe issues that affect children with diabetes during school.
2. Create a care plan for a child with diabetes in a variety of school settings.

* Session 4 - Metabolic Syndrome:
1. Identify the similarities and differences between metabolic syndrome and diabetes.
2. Define insulin resistance.
3. Discuss the treatment of metabolic syndrome.

* Session 5 - Insulin Therapy/CSII:
1. Discuss therapies utilized for glycemic control of the diabetic patient:
o insulin therapies
o calculations
o insulin pump therapy

* Session 6 - Recognizing & Reducing Risks and Complications of Diabetes:
1. Summarize the causes, symptoms and prevention/treatment of the acute and chronic complications of diabetes.
2. Assess persons with diabetes to recognize the importance of prevention.

* Session 7 - Pump Use in Children:
1. Describe the advantages of pump therapy.
2. Recognize potential insulin pump candidates.
3. Create a plan of care for a child using a pump in the school setting.

* Session 8 - Neurogenic Ulcers:
1. List options available for off-loading a neuropathic foot for prevention and healing.
2. Apply safe alternatives to sharp debridement of hyperkeratotic plaque (callous).
3. Analyze options for optimizing nutrition during healing.
4. Describe the benefits of moist wound healing and moisture balancing dressings.

* Session 9 - Gestational Diabetes:
1. Assess gestational diabetes diagnostic criteria.
2. Outline current treatment strategies for women with gestational diabetes.

* Session 10 - Type 2 Diabetes Medications:
1. Discuss an evidence-based algorithm for the use of oral medication.
2. Explain initiation of insulin to optimize glycemic control for Type 2 patients.
