TelmedPak (1998) is a philanthropic project of Elixir Technologies Pakistan. The hub of TelMedPak activities is its website (www.telmedpak.com) which serves as the largest Pakistan based medical web portal and as a repository of Health, Telemedicine and Information Technology. The site contains information concerning all types of health problems from the common cold to hepatitis. The website also provides health information in Urdu, possesses on-line clinics and medical tutorials, vital mother/child care information, a discussion forum for doctors and students alike and an "Ask a Doc" section.

Apart from the website, TelMedPak in the 'field' has collaborated with major universities in Pakistan including Rawalpindi Medical College, Agha Khan University, and the National University of Science & Technology in order to recruit medical students. More than two hundred of these students were enrolled in the five-year "Elixir Internship Program" in order to learn Telemedicine, content building, web maintenance and to carry out health related research. Training trips were also organized to top universities such as Stanford, University of California, Los Angeles and University of Southern California. Two members of the TelMedPak team were nominated for higher Telemedicine training in United States of America. The idea behind the training was to increase the Telemedicine human resource component in Pakistan; both members are now actively involved in training more medical staff in the Telemedicine sector.

Along with the training programs TelMedPak successfully accomplished two pilot projects. The first was setup in Taxilla and the other in Gilgit; the hospitals were equipped with a computer, internet access and a scanner and were required to email case reports of patients that required expert medical opinion. All reports or images were scanned and attached to the email. These emails were then analyzed by doctors and specialists at the Holy Family Hospital in Rawalpindi and a reply was sent back as soon as the problem was detected.

The Gilgit project was also studied at a higher level with the objectives listed below in mind;

* Tele-consultation
* Computer training of general practitioner and specialist
* Health education through TelMedPak site
* Training of technical staff
* Implementation of primary health care in targeted areas

Both projects were highly successful; proving the necessity and more so proving that Telemedicine can work in a country like ours! A Success Story Providing health care services to Northern Areas through TelMedPak was a challenge for TelMedPak team. This challenge was successfully attained in a short span of time. This was made possible with the support of Government officials, Comsats and Agha Khan Health Services. They not only assured their support for Telemedicine but also concluded to immediately arrange a setup for Telemedicine. In nutshell the TelMedPak team achieved a superb response from the community. Our activities were carried out as planned. Our Tele Medicine project was successfully implemented with set goals and objectives. We prioritized our plans and we believe this prototype model would hold a promise for the future.
